Intro to Duality

On the 3rd of February, Duality kicked off 2021 with our Introduction Event at the University of Auckland Business School.

We had the chance to present our research findings and explain why Duality formed and how we intend to make a difference.

It was an honour to have our two speakers, Ajukhan and Mariam talking about their work and dual identity experience.

Anjukhan Kathirgamanathan’s Bio

Identifying as both a Kiwi and a Sri Lankan, Anjukan has always felt that his dual identity, whilst certainly providing some challenges growing up, has been one his strongest assets as he finds his place in this increasingly globalised world. Anjukan grew up with a strong sense of community and attachment to his cultural roots and would like future generations to be able to experience the same. Anjukan has a particular interest in the area of climate justice and is currently working on an education for sustainability programme in Sri Lanka.

Mariam Bahar’s Bio

Mariam has always found her faith to be her greatest strength. Born in Sri Lanka and identifying as a Muslim, Mariam’s journey of discovering her duality began at a very young age despite her comprehending this as a child. After migrating to New Zealand with her family, Mariam was able to gain a greater understanding of her two worlds. Whilst acknowledging and conforming to family and cultural expectations as a woman, Mariam began embarking on a journey to find her authentic self. This journey involved bridging the gap between her two worlds, challenging norms, and breaking stereotypes.
